Friday's Faves

Our household (well, Matt and I anyways) have been on a bit of a health kick lately.  Not that I haven't ever really been unhealthy, but I certainly have been a little out of sorts with diet and exercise over the past few months for whatever reason.  I've been trying to be more mindful about what I'm putting in my body and making a point to exercise every day, even if that just means a walk around our (very hilly) neighborhood.  Matt has really been doing great and I'm proud of the changes he has made and the new habits he is forming.  Being healthy is not always fun per se, but it definitely helps you to feel better, and that's fun, right??  Here are some of the "tools" we've been using lately...

* PB2.  This stuff is awesome.  Two tablespoons of this powder only has 45 calories.  Gives anything that yummy peanut butter taste.  If you want it to be an actual spread, then add one tablespoon of water to the powder.  I like to just add a couple spoonfuls of the powder to my morning shakes to get the peanut butter flavor without the calories and fat of actual peanut butter.

* Shakeology.  I'm using this as the base for my morning shakes.  Perfect ratio of fat/carbs/protein/fiber.  Plus it's filling and tastes great.  Below is my favorite combo.  I just add ice and then blend away in my Magic Bullet.  Such a quick and tasty breakfast.

* 30 Day Abs Challenge.  I came across this on Facebook back in May and have committed to it for the month of June.  I missed a few days, but for the most part I have stuck with it.  I like that you can basically pick any month and participate.  I may try and do it a few times a year.  Of course I'll do some ab work even when I'm not following the actual challenge, but this is a good option when you need to ramp things up.  Oh, and I have definitely noticed some results!

* Zumba!  I'm a new Zumba convert and I love it!  Such a high energy, cardio workout and I love that it is a judgment free zone and you can just let loose and have fun.  It's hard to find a workout that is truly fun, but this one is.

* Matt is using the MyFitnessPal app on his phone to track his food and exercise and he really likes it.  I think it is pretty similar to Weight Watchers in the sense that you plug-in everything you eat and whenever you exercise, but instead of having a "points" quota each day, you have a calorie quota.  Seems to be working for him!

What are some of your favorite healthy habits and tricks?  I'm always on the lookout for new ideas and tips.

Throw Back Thursday

Do y'all remember several years ago when those "25 Random Things About Me" posts were going around Facebook like crazy?  If you were tagged by another friend that did the post, you were supposed to do it as well?  I vaguely remembered doing it.  Well, for whatever reason mine popped up in my news feed the other day.  The one I had done back in early 2009.  Here it is below.  For kicks and giggles I thought I would provide some commentary.  Funny how things change, huh?

1. I live for the weekends because during the week I leave at 7 in the morning and get home at 9 at night (gym, work, class), so needless to say, I am pretty much exhausted come Friday!  If only I knew how exhausted I would be after becoming a mom.  I only thought I was exhausted then.
2. Putting on high heels is pretty much a surefire way to make me feel better about myself on "frumpy" days.  Umm.  Now I feel better about myself by simply putting on deodorant in the morning.  Doesn't take much anymore y'all.
3. I absolutely love animals and wish I could just spend my days on a farm in the country rescuing the ones that are homeless, abused or neglected so they could have a home as loving as the one my dogs have.  We're doing good just to make sure our own two dogs are fed and given the chance to poop once a day.  Sometimes we get them outside to do it.  Sometimes we forget and discover it in random closets.
4. I am a little OCD about a few things: washing my hands, brushing my teeth and taking an assortment of vitamins everyday.  To this list I would like to add: suctioning out AW's nose with the Nose Frida and checking the video monitor approximately 247 times while he is sleeping.
5. I am obsessed with getting a mini horse like on Rob and Big. I would name him Harvey.  Again, it's hard enough taking care of Riley and Maddux at this point.
6. I am undecided about having more than one kid. It seems like everyone says that you just have to have more than one, but I can’t help but feel like one will be plenty to manage!  AW is most definitely plenty to manage, but I can't imagine not going through all this at least one more time.
7. I love my birthday, but I am seriously afraid of getting old and follow a very regimented skincare routine to hopefully deter those pesky signs of aging.  I still follow a regimented skincare routine, but seeing as how having a baby has added several new lines on my face, I'm learning to embrace the aging process.
8. My heart still flutters a little everytime Matt says “I love you” almost like we just started dating and he is saying it for the first time.  This is still true.  Words of affirmation is definitely still my Love Language.
9. My absolute favorite date night is putting on comfy pajamas, ordering sushi take-out and watching a scary movie. Matt gets so frustrated everytime he asks me what I want to do on “date night” and I tell him just that.  Watching a movie?  What's that?  Actually my favorite date night now consists of wine and good food at a favorite restaurant and then going to bed early.
10. I am very paranoid about getting cancer for some reason and drive Matt crazy because I am always making him inspect freckles, bumps, spots, etc. on my body that I think look strange.  Still true, except now I'm also paranoid about AW getting cancer, or any sort of illness for that matter.  I would love to keep him in a bubble, but I hear this is frowned upon.
11. I love learning, hence my being in college for almost 10 years between undergrad and grad school.  Ehh.  Definitely no plans to EVER go back to school.
12. I despise olives. Matt dared me to eat one at Bonefish once and I literally threw up in my mouth a little.  Still grossed out by them.
13. I did not like either of our presidential choices on the ballot this year and still have my Huckabee sticker on the car…haha!  I like to think that a good Republican bought the ole' Camry and that the Huckabee sticker is still stuck to the rear window.
14. I love looking at houses and reading about real estate. I have a shoebox full of all my house clippings, architectural plans and interior designs so that hopefully we can build our dream house just like we want it someday.  That shoebox is now called Pinterest.
15. I am fascinated with vampires...movies, books, random documentaries on TV. Matt thinks this is completely bizarre and freaky, but I am pretty much convinced that there is such a thing out there somewhere.  HAHA!  Edward Cullen for life!
16. I have recently taken up yoga and am amazed at how good I feel (physically and mentally) when I leave class.  1.5+ hour yoga classes?  Ain't no one got time for that!
17. I feel most at peace when I have prayed and spent some time with God.  Still true, but I also feel very at peace when I am nursing AW to sleep at night.
18. I can’t ever remember being as completely happy as I was on our wedding day. I wish we could just do it over and over again.  The day AW was born comes in at a very close second, but the "do it over and over again" fragment of that sentence causes me some heartburn due to another word I associate with that day..."episiotomy."
19. I like to experiment with recipes and make unhealthy foods, healthy. I think it would be awesome to have a healthy cooking show.  I can't even tell you the last time I've opened a cookbook or clipped a new recipe from a magazine.  Just not enough hours in the day to make anything exciting.
20. Nothing cheers me up quite like coming home to 2 dogs who act as though I am a t-bone steak walking through the door. They can literally cheer up any bad day or mood in an instance.  To be honest, right now the dogs just stress me out.
21. My favorite bible verse is “Do not worry about anything; instead pray about everything” Philippians 4:6 - I have this written in random places around the house.  Still love this verse, but right now my favorite is probably Jeremiah 29:11 - For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.
22. I never liked coffee until starting law school. Now I can't function or start my day without it.  Still true, although I now drink decaf, and yet I still think I get some sort of boost from it.
23. My three wardrobe staples are red dresses, black turtlenecks and knee high boots.  Umm, lets make that easy access tops (nursing friendly), leggings and maxi skirts.
24. Grocery shopping is probably my favorite past time. I seriously spend about 2 hours there every Saturday, reading labels, comparing prices and looking at new items, and making the occasional friend or two.  Seeing as how I usually have a whiny toddler on my hip, I get in and out of the store as quickly as possible.
25. My first childhood memory was when my mom did a home perm on my stick straight hair when I was 4. The smell of chemicals at salons always bring me back to the horrendous event and unfortunately there is a class picture to memorialize it.  Still traumatized by this.

Now go back and search your Facebook news feed for your own "25 Random Things" list and have yourself a little laugh:-)

An Afternoon at the Park

This was just a random Sunday afternoon at the park, but the joy it brought Asher Wade is undeniable.  Oh to be a child again and to find so much joy in the simple things.  I feel like I go through so much time and effort (and money, ha!) trying to create all these amazing memories for him, but I'm not sure that anything gets him as excited as an afternoon spent outside playing.  He just has a ball, as if the pictures didn't already tell you that:-)

Ending the outing with a little mac n' cheese certainly didn't hurt either;)

3 Ingredient Peanut Butter Cookies YOU Should Make Now

I highly recommend you make these cookies stat.  With only three ingredients, it won't take you long at all.  So chewy and yummy.  Even I couldn't believe how something so easy could be so good.

All you need is:
1 cup natural peanut butter
1 cup brown sugar
1 egg

Mix the three ingredients together in a mixing bowl until smooth.  Pop the bowl in the fridge for 10 minutes or so (I did this while I pre-heated the oven and got my cookie sheet ready).  Remove the bowl from the fridge.  Roll the dough into balls (ping pong ball size) between your hands and place an inch apart on a greased cookie sheet.  Flatten with a fork, making a crisscross design.  Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes.  That's it!

AW liked them too:-)

Easiest recipe ever!

Logging in and catching up

In case you haven't noticed, I took a little hiatus from blogging.  In fact, I kind of feel like I took a little hiatus from the "social scene" in general.  This wasn't really intentional...it sort of just happened.  It wasn't because work was overly busy, or that I was busier at home than normal.  I think I just went through this little introverted phase where I kind of just wanted to keep to myself.  Do you ever get that way sometimes?  I couldn't even tell what I've been up to over the past month, because to be honest, I didn't pay much attention to it.  I don't have many pictures on my phone except for the ones below (when normally I snap several every single day), there were only a couple random posts on my Instagram account, and I kind of just randomly perused Facebook and checked in on a few of my favorite blogs every now and then.  I love social media in the sense that it allows me to keep up with friends and family, but sometimes it can be very overwhelming!  It's like I think I have to know what's going on with everyone and everything, or I may just fall off the map.  This is silly, but true.  Anyways, I guess you could say I've just been in a little bit of a funk and it caused me to pull inward and just sort of disconnect.  And that's just that.  Maybe I will write about it a little more at some point:-)

But anyways, I'm feeling more like my regular self now and am enjoying this new season as much as one can enjoy sweltering heat and humidity.  It seems like Spring kind of skipped over Birmingham, which makes me sad because I love Spring!  Instead we went from a freezing, cold winter to a scorching, hot summer.  I remember it being freezing still in April and then all of a sudden it was 90+ degrees in May.  Crazy Alabama weather.

Other things that have been going on?  Well, I am leading a small group for the first time ever and it has been so fulfilling.  We have a great group of ladies in our home every week and we are studying Let it Go by Karen Ehman, which is full of all kinds of practical and helpful teachings.  This is a great read for any of you women that have a hard time letting go of the control and letting God take over.  It's relevant to so many women and I think we are all getting a lot out of not only the study itself, but also from each other.  Nothing better than having a group of women all praying for and encouraging one another on a daily basis.  It's been a blessing for sure.

Other happenings over the past month have included a move in to our new house, a Birmingham Baron's baseball game, several birthday parties for little friends, AW's first trip to the dentist, lots of pool time, fun in the sun, and of course a tantrum thrown in here and there;)  Overall I'd call the start of Summer 2014 a success.  I've included some pictures below and will hopefully be back soon with some more regular updates.  Until then, TGIF!

This stinker ran all over the place!

Hanging out with sweet Avery and Kinsley

Maybe someday he will be out there like his daddy was

Hanging with his little friend Juliana. I like how it looks like he's about to get bopped.

That smile...

Looking like such a big boy in his big boy pajamas

Lunch out with mama one day

Modeling his new tennis shoes #allthecolors

Just the start of the tantrum phase #toddlerlife

And here we are at the dentist for the first time. I will call these the "before shots."

And now the "after shots."  AW was not a fan, although he did enjoy picking out a toy from the treasure chest when it was all over.

Mommy and Me Pictures {Visual Arts by Jessica}

I am so excited to share some pictures from a recent photo session I did with the talented Jessica Marshall of Visual Arts by Jessica.  Jessica is actually a fellow mama that I met through our local breast feeding support group.  She wanted to recruit some mamas for a project she was working on that would include some "mommy and me" and nursing shots.  We had so much fun and I just love the sweet pictures she captured.  As always, I am thankful for talented friends.  Here are a few of the shots if you would like to see, and if you are in the Birmingham metro area, please consider contacting Jessica!  She's super easy to work with and made me feel right at ease.  Plus, since she has kiddos of her own, she wrangled in AW with no problem:-)
